That's an awfully long time to be using up old parts. The Zenit trademark is associated with 35 mm SLR cameras. If that's the case, why would the same factory continue to produce the 44-2 alongside the later (and optically better) 44M and 44M-4? I could believe they'd build them concurrently to use up parts stocks, but my 44-2 was made six years after my 44M. Zenit ( Russian: ) is a Soviet camera brand manufactured by KMZ in the town of Krasnogorsk near Moscow since 1952 and by BelOMO in Belarus since the 1970s. My understanding is that the 44-2, 44M and 44M-x series are evolutions of the same design (in that order). Assuming that - in all three cases - those first two digits signify the year of manufacture (which I believe is correct for these later lenses, though not necessarily so for many earlier Russian lenses), that means the 44M is the oldest of the three, followed by the 44-2 and 44M-4 which were manufactured in the same year.Īnd so, I'm a little confused. The 44-2 has an eight digit serial number starting "83", the 44M's number is seven digits starting "77", and the 44M-4's number is six digits starting "83". In my little collection of mostly-Soviet-era Russian lenses, I have three Helios 44-series models - a 44-2, 44M and 44M-4.Īll three lenses bear the "KMZ" logo, showing that they were manufactured by, or on behalf of, the KMZ plant. This was a Russian-made lens that essentially tried to emulate a famous Zeiss one. The bokeh, as on many early SLR lenses, is "swirly-" that is, the light disks formed by out-of-focus points of light distort away from the center of the image, and when there are many of them, they can form a sort of "vortex" or "swirl." Many photographers seek out this effect due to its evocative appearance.Ĭистема-Гелиос-44 f'=59 2w=40 1:2 Вариант-ST01FB06 21/ 8/2017 0:57 OPAL-PC Meet the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 Lens Sony A7 with Helios 44-2 58mm f/2.0 lens I quickly found out that there is a cult following for a lens called a Helios 58mm f/2. Bokeh is the lens's most commonly-mentioned attribute, with a medium-fast max aperture of f/2 giving plenty of opportunity to blur the background. The Helios-44's are generally noted as good lenses, the common allegation of poor quality control notwithstanding. This continued to be Soviet camera industry practice except on the most basic lenses well after West German and Japanese makers went more or less exclusively to automatic apertures. Thus, by twisting the latter ring until it stops, the lens can be conveniently closed down from wide open to a selected f/stop without taking one's eye away from the viewfinder, and vice versa. dual ring: one ring with click stops and marks for the f/stops controls the position of the preset stop, while one free-moving ring actually controls the aperture, but stops when it gets to the preset stop. The Zenitar 75mm f/1.4 Helios Edition lens has just been released for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, such as the Sony A7 IV. Early versions have 13-blade diaphragm and later ones have 8 or 6 blades.Īs a Biotar copy it is a modified Double Gauss design with two groups of three elements each, relatively symmetric, and well corrected for aberrations. At its beginnings, the Helios 44-2 was a Soviet made copy of the Zeiss lens, but was later developed into something more original. Its history can be traced in Germany, where the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm f2 originated from. The Helios-44 was made for the Zenit m39 mount and then for the m42 mount among others. Helios is another legendary Soviet class of lenses. It is essentially a Zeiss Biotar clone- this was a fast normal for the Exakta mount. The Helios-44 is one of the most mass produced Soviet SLR lenses, a 58mm f/2 normal. Warning: Choking Hazard - Small parts may be generated. But students protested because of their loyalty to the Banana Slug, which had been used unofficially for the school’s intramural sports and other activities as a symbol that everyone could participate. When the school first joined the NCAA for Division III athletics in 1980, administrators actually chose the Sea Lions as the team name. The Banana Slug isn’t exactly the mightiest of beasts, and that’s why the school proudly adopted it. Of the many University of California schools, UC Santa Cruz takes the cake for quirkiest mascot. He’s pushing for the team to stay in San Diego, but if they leave, he won’t follow them out of town. Maybe a mascot would help change that?Ĭalifornia Boltman the fan is a lightning rod in Chargers’ relocation dramaįor two decades, Dan Jauregui has boasted he is the No. Since relocating to the City of Angels, the Chargers have struggled to create a home-field advantage. The San Diegan hung up the cape when the Chargers moved to Los Angeles after 22 years of service. Making a mascot out of a bolt of lightning might be a hefty task for the Chargers, so superfan Dan Jauregui came to the rescue and made himself the unofficial mascot, Boltman. But what’s more reliable than a nice, sturdy tree? Boltman The school has been debating on what figure should represent them since removing their Indian mascot in the 1970s and hasn’t found something to which it can commit. The friendly fellow is the official mascot of the band (yes, the one that was on the field!) and has been widely adopted by fans of the Cardinal as their frontman. The Stanford Tree is actually not the university’s official mascot. This meant constantly blocking people from coming through,” says Sheppard. “One problem we had was the multiple access points to the street. They did such a convincing job that a South African woman living in Adelaide felt like she’d been transported home. This included putting in coin operated parking meters, old cars with South African number plates, changing the street signs and shop fronts. “We took possession of the main street in Adelaide at 6pm the night before our shoot date, and set about transforming it into Cape Town,” Jackie Sheppard, Blaney’s partner at Footprint Films, tells KFTV. With the invaluable support of Arclight, they got to work. “On our recce there in November 2018, our production designer Scott Bird showed us a picture of Cape Town in the 1970s, it looked exactly like Adelaide now,” enthuses Blaney. Its old colonial architecture was perfect. So they moved to Adelaide instead, which had actually doubled for South Africa before. “Having a first time feature director put pressure on what financiers would stretch to and eventually, although there was a huge amount of enthusiasm there, we just couldn’t get the budget together to make Escape viable to the production value that we thought it deserved,” says Blaney. Unfortunately, despite securing approval for the local rebate and looking at the builds, they faced difficulties getting all the funding together for the whole project in South Africa. So excited were they by the place that they thought it was worth investing a bit of the development money into having drawings done for the existing backlot set adapted into Pretoria prison.Ĭape Town Film Studios' Robben Island set. They were assured by the guys at the studio that they could do anything they wanted with the set. “I’ve done a film there before using one side of the façade, turning it into a diner (and its been used by other films), but the main quadrangle of the prison and the cells remain the same.”ĭespite initial scepticism as to whether it could look like Pretoria, Blaney and director Francis completely fell in love with the place on the spot. “It’s an incredible site,” Auret adds to KFTV. “Our location manager in South Africa, Michael Auret, insisted we should also look at the backlot of Cape Town Studios where they had a set of Robben Island prison, which was used for the film Long Walk to Freedom.” We also met potential financiers, cast and crew,” Blaney explains to KFTV. “We originally intended to film Escape from Pretoria in South Africa, and went out in 2017 to look at locations, including paying a visit to the (still functioning) Pretoria prison itself. Once they’d secured the rights, Annan took on the directing reins and co-wrote the adapted script with L.H. Mark sent Annan, an unknown British director, Jenkin’s book back in 2012 (even though they didn’t have the rights at the time) and he loved it. That is until 2003 when Mark Blaney of UK outfit Footprint Films met with Tim over dinner and knew after talking to him that they had to make the film.īlaney and his partner at Footprint Films, Jackie Sheppard, joined forces with Harry Potter producer David Barron at Beagle Pug Films and Gary Hamilton and Michelle Krumm at Arclight Films, based in Australia and the US, who are the movie’s sales agent. Other producers had shown interest in adapting Jenkin’s book Inside Out: Escape from Pretoria prison, which was published in the late 1980s, but no project came to anything. The film tells the true-life story of political prisoners Tim Jenkin (Radcliffe) and Stephen Lee (Daniel Webber), two white South Africans who, along with other prisoners, hatched a plot to break out of Pretoria Central Prison in 1979 using handcrafted wooden keys, after being convicted of campaigning with the African National Congress (ANC). British director Francis Annan’s forthcoming film, Escape from Pretoria, set in the notorious South African prison during Apartheid, filmed entirely in the South Australian city of Adelaide. |
